| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com essential recording When Duke Ellington began to slip classical motifs and structures into his jazz compositions in the '30s, two fellow composers took his example as a challenge to do the same. Raymond Scott played movie music, led the house band on the popular radio show, "Your Hit Parade," and supplied much of the music for Carl Stalling's famous cartoon scores; John Kirby led a jazz combo that included Ben Webster, Russell Procope and Charlie Shavers. All three bandleaders are saluted on Bug Music. The music inside is playful and joyful, with Byron's clarinet skipping and jumping through the catchy melodies and quirky rhythms. In fact, what's most striking about the recording is not the mix of jazz and classical music, but the mix of jazz and humor, an all too rare combination these days. --Geoffrey Himes

Respectable but... October 24, 2008 Powell E. Barber (Tallahassee, FL USA) I suspect some folks are buying this album for the Raymond Scott tunes. If so, please, please, consider buying the original. Byron's effort is respectable, but he somehow manages to suck the life out of Scott's tunes. With few exceptions, they sound as though they are being played by sedated musicians who just want to get it in the can and move on. If you can tolerate the decreased production quality of the original, you'll get a lot more music, I assure you. Bear in mind that I'm speaking only about the Raymond Scott tunes, such as The Penguin, War Dance for Wooden Indians, Siberian Sleighride... If you do nothing else, compare the original version of The Penguin to this one before buying. It's available here as well.
Fantastic! August 20, 2005 C. J. Fuller (Michigan) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This music is energetic, joyous, creative and inspiring. And addictive, as some of the tunes live on in one's head long after listening! I've been waiting for music like this all my life.
Motivating Jazz will take you back... August 10, 2005 Michael M. Miller (Baltimore, MD) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I enjoyed this album much more than I thought that I would. Listening to it evokes many excited emotions, and it's great to dance to.
Sublime Work January 11, 2005 BrooklynBen (Brooklyn, NY USA) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
I noticed that most of my Amazon reviews were negative. I tend to rant when something fails, but I rarely go online to express the joy that some products bring -- I'm clearly a grump. So I decided to write about something that elates me day in and out. This music is beautifully played, well recorded, and my whole family enjoys it. My wife and I chose 'Charlie's Prelude' as our wedding song, our two-year-old daughter will dance anytime we put on this CD, and I've even had the great fortune to see Don Byron's group play these almost-impossible-to-execute tracks live. Bug Music is just a terrific work. Buy it and enjoy it!
For grown-ups AND kids! December 5, 2003 Alanna Kellogg (St. Louis) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a favorite when looking for an energy pop ... sort of caffeine on CD. And during a week-long painting project with a 13-year old, all hip hop and rap, this was the single CD he asked for again and again!
